party growth

Tools we can use

Politics is all about people. Thetechnology of politics is about how they communicate and organize - and that technology is changing.

Things are changing in the way successful campaigns are organized because of new tools that make it easier for activists to become more active, which makes it more likely that they will get involved.

There's an entire generation of voters that get itsnews online...and they're engaging in their political activity online as well. Our party has to be there in a way that's useful to them, with the tools that they can use to impact the things they care about.

Promoting better precinct organization

When was the last time you ever attended a standing room only precinct meeting? How about been the only person there? It's more likely the latter. Of course we've got some places in this state that are extremely rural and hard to organize, and others that are very urban with more interested people.

The fact remains that it's difficult to get people interested in turning out to any type of meeting, (even with food and good speakers), much less onewherewe just elect officers anddelegates and then go home.

Out of the over four million residents of South Carolina, around fivethousand or soturn out for precinct meetings.Apathy is not our friend.

Investing in the Grassroots

One of the things thathas always bothered me is the degree that we always talk about building the grassroots of our party, but our national party doesn'talways invest real resources into making it happen, relying too much on our volunteer support alone.

Right now, the Democrat National Committee pays for two full-time staffers in all fifty of their state party offices to focus on developing their grassroots operations. Sure, there are a lot of states that this would never help them carry in a presidential election, but what it does do is help them develop the support and infrastructure that can make a difference in down-ballot races.

Growing our party

As I've been campaigning for the National Committeeman's position, I've had several people ask me my thoughts on the best way to grow our party. More often than not, this question comes from someone in one of our rural counties...which tend to be heavily Democrat.

I think the short version of the answer to this question is to reach out and bring other conservatives into our party. But in order to be effective in doing that, those conservatives need to clearly understand the differences between ourselves and the Democrats.

We already know why we're involved. We're involved because we care about something - some issue or group of issues. Because there are things we want to see happen - or not happen - with our government. In short, we're here because we care. And it's because we care that we donate our time and resources.
