More tips on dealing with the media (part 3)

The last week or so we've been going over some tips on how to deal with the media.  So far we've looked at the importance of 1) getting to know those who cover your beat, 2) being straightforward with how you deal with them, 3) focusing on your message and 4) being proactive in pushing your message.

Finally, here are two more tips.

Be ready to respond

Mark Twain once said that “a lie can get half-way around the world before the truth can even get its boots on”. The fact that news cycles get faster and faster each year only amplifies the truth of that statement.

Effective political confrontation: Step 2 - Framing the debate

“Framing the debate” is a strategic way to present issues in terms that help shape the debate in your favor.

Looked at another way, it's a way of controlling the ground you fight on.  For conservatives, the best way to do this is to “get to the heart of the matter”, which is usually the liberal's Achilles’ heel.

Going on offense

When going on the offensive, if you fail to get to the heart of the matter, you’re likely to get sucked in to a debate that is centered on the liberal world view.  In other words, you end up fighting on their terms.  For example, on the issue of abortion, conservatives should always frame the issue on the heart of the matter: the life of the unborn child and its right to life.

The importance of confrontation

Most people hate confrontation.  But given that “politics is people”, and about people agreeing and disagreeing, effective participation in our political system will inevitably call for confrontation.  Bank on it.

In many cases, people are quick to compromise away principle just to avoid having a confrontation.  And others may have intially got in to politics as "hard chargers”, with a mind to reform the system or address certain issues, only to find that their determination gradually wanes because of the sluggishness of the process.  Before they realize it, they become co-opted into the system and are ready to compromise before negotiating even begins.

The most effective confrontation is persistent confrontation.

Six grassroots lobbying tips

Recently we've covered a good bit of info when it comes to grassroots lobbying and having an impact on the legislative process, so now's a good time to summarize some fundamental points.

Effective contact with elected officials

Our form of government relies heavily on the feedback and involvement of its citizens in order to operate effectively, or least for the people it's meant to govern.

That means you help government operate more effectively by contacting elected officials on a regular basis. - whether they like it or not.  But just remember that the old adage that “it’s not what you say, but how you say it” applies.

How you say something can be just as important as what you say.  As Senator Hubert Humphrey once said, “The right to be speak does not necessarily include the right to be taken seriously”.  If you have something important to say about your government, take the time to say it in the most effective way possible.

Basic grassroots lobbying

No matter how involved you may become in the political process, every citizen (in the serious sense of the word) should know how to lobby their government.

Knowing how to effectively lobby – and doing so – is what gives conservatives a voice in the development of public policy.  It’s not enough to show up at the ballot box every few years and elect some people to office.  You’ve got to keep an eye on them once they get in, (even the one’s you may be friends with).  Then let them hear from you when necessary.  That’s the essence of grassroots lobbying.

But how to be more effective in the process?

Lobbying at the local level (fighting city hall)

When it comes to local lobbying, the process is a little different because the local legislative process is different.

The biggest difference between local and state (or federal) lobbying is that there is usually just one chamber to deal with, (a council or a board), rather than two.  The following is a brief description of one example for a city council.

Tips on lobbying at the state level

Previously we took a look at the steps of the legislative process, revolving mostly around Congress and opportunities for lobbying at the federal level.  Although the state legislative processes and procedures are very similar to the federal level, there are differences between the two levels of government that you need to be aware of.

The slow motion sausage factory: understanding the legislative process

So you want to know more about the legislative process?  Glad you asked!  Because if you want to have an impact on something you need to understand it first.

This will be the first in a series of entries geared to give you a better understanding of how the process works at all levels, then we'll talk about how to have an impact on it.

The slow motion sausage factory

All levels of government in our country have procedures that enable a bill (a proposed law) to become law.  By knowing how this process works, you’ll be better equipped to influence legislation or to engage in any basic lobbying activities.

How to get elected to a local party office

Thinking about tossing your hat in the ring and running for a party office?  If you want to have an even greater impact on the things you care about, serving in a party office is another great opportunity to do exactly that.

But you need keep a few things in mind...

Political parties tend to promote from within

Whether you’re seeking to become chairman of your favorite service club or you want to rise in the political arena, the best way to do so is the time-honored method of “paying your dues”.  People have greater trust and respect for those that they have seen working and sacrificing for the cause for long periods of time.
